The story of the word
πρόβλημα è ciò che viene gettato davanti: l'ostacolo sul cammino, ma anche lo scudo che si tiene avanti in battaglia e il promontorio che sporge sul mare. Nella matematica greca il πρόβλημα è la richiesta di costruire una figura, in opposizione al θεώρημα, che chiede invece di dimostrare. Euclide alterna le due cose per tutti gli Elementi.
