El aparato es de principios del siglo XVII y el nombre latino, thermometrum, aparece en la década de 1620, cuando el instrumento todavía no tenía una escala fija que permitiera comparar dos lecturas. La escala centígrada que hoy leemos en él es muy posterior: Celsius la propuso en 1742. De θερμός salen «térmico», «termo» y las termas romanas.
