The story of the word
διαγιγνώσκω no es «conocer» sino «distinguir»: conocer separando una cosa de otra parecida. Ahí está el oficio entero, y de ahí sigue viniendo el diagnóstico diferencial. Su hermano griego es el pronóstico, con πρό, conocer de antemano, al que los tratados hipocráticos daban más importancia: al médico se le juzgaba por acertar el desenlace, más que por ponerle nombre al mal.
