The story of the word
βάπτω significa immergere, e βαπτίζω è il suo intensivo: si usava per tuffare, per affondare una nave e soprattutto per tingere un tessuto, visto che tingere voleva dire immergere nel colore. I Vangeli lo adottano per il gesto di Giovanni nel Giordano. Il greco moderno usa ancora βάφω per «tingere», mentre in Occidente del bagno è rimasto solo il nome, dato che nella pratica l'acqua si versa.
