The story of the word
Τύπος nasce dal verbo τύπτω, «battere»: è prima il colpo, poi il segno che il colpo lascia, infine lo stampo che riproduce quel segno. Da qui la tipografia, che batte lettere sulla carta, e il «tipo» come esemplare di una serie. San Paolo usa τύπος per la figura anticipatrice, ed è la stessa parola che dà i «tipi» dei caratteri a stampa. L'uso familiare, «un tipo strano», è ottocentesco.
