The story of the word
Khlóē was a cult title of Demeter, worshipped as the green blade coming up through the field. The name reached English twice over: through Paul's letter to Corinth, which mentions the household of Chloe, and through the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe, which made it a shepherdess name in English verse. Chlorine was named in 1810 for its yellow-green colour, from khlōrós, the closely related adjective for that shade.
